Barcelona will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the 2023-24 La Liga campaign when they travel to Villarreal on Sunday. The visitors are heading into the match on the back of a comprehensive 2-0 win over Cadiz last weekend, while the Yellow Submarine edged past Mallorca last time out. Having collected four points from their opening two league games, the reigning champions are occupying sixth spot in the Spanish top flight standings, while the hosts are sitting at the 10th position, boasting three points from two matches.

Villarreal began their 2023-24 La Liga season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Real Betis on August 12, but they managed to return to winning ways last time out at Mallorca. The Yellow Submarine secured all three points at Iberostar Stadium last weekend thanks to Gerard Moreno’s lone goal on the hour mark. It was a dominant performance from Quique Setien’s side, having had more than 60% ball possession and attempted 15 shots with three of them on target, compared to just a solitary attempt on goal by the Pirates. Villarreal lost twice against Blaugrana last season, including a 1-0 defeat in the corresponding fixture in February, and they will be hoping to earn a positive result at El Madrigal on Sunday.
Barcelona, on the other hand, started their title-defence with a surprise 0-0 draw away to Getafe on the opening weekend, but managed to get back on track by defeating Cadiz last time out. Blaugrana put two goals past El Submarino Amarillo without reply thanks to Pedri’s 82nd-minute opener and Ferran Torres’ effort four minutes into the second-half. Meanwhile, it has been a difficult summer in the transfer market for Xavi’s side due to the clubs financial problems, with only Oriol Romeu, Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez being added to the squad.
Villarreal probable starting lineup: Jorgensen, Foyth, Gabbia, Cuenca, Pedraza, Terrats, Parejo, Baena, G Moreno, Sorloth, Brereton
Barcelona probable starting lineup: Ter Stegen, Kounde, Christensen, De Jong, Yamal, Romeu, Gundogan, Balde, Gavi, Lewandowski, Torres
