After starting off their Gold Cup campaign with a surprise 1-1 draw against Jamaica, USA needed an impressive victory against Saint Kitts and Nevis on matchday two in order to justify their tag as the favourites. The hosts did just that, scoring six goals without reply against the Sugar Boys, thanks to one goal from Bryan Reynolds, Dorde Mihailovic’s brace and Jesus Ferreira’s hat-trick. BJ Callaghan’s side fired 17 shots in the opening half against Saint Kitts, the most for his team after 45 minutes since at least 2010. Meanwhile, the Stars and Stripes are now unbeaten in 18 successive group fixtures in the Gold Cup. The Yanks just needs to avoid a defeat on Sunday to progress to the last eight, while a loss in their final group fixture combined with a draw or a win for Jamaica against Saint Kitts would signal the first time the Stars and Stripes have ever been eliminated from the group stage of this competition.
Trinidad & Tobago, on the other hand, thrashed Saint Kitts 3-0 in their opening fixture thanks to one goal each from Alvin Jones and Ajani Fortune, and Jameel Ible’s own goal. But the Soca Warriors lost out to Jamaica on matchday two. Reggae Boys took a 3-0 lead in the first half through Demarai Gray’s brace and one goal from Leon Bailey, before Trinidad pulled one back through Andre Rampersad’s 49th-minute effort, but Dujuan Richards completed the drubbing with a 92nd-minute strike. If Angus Eve’s men can find a way to claim three points on Sunday, it would not only be their first win against USA at the Gold Cup, but it would also put them into the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015.
USA probable starting lineup: Slonina, Yedlin, Robinson, Neal, Tolkin, Mihailovic, Roldan, Sonora; Vazquez, J. Morris, Cowell
Trinidad & Tobago probable starting lineup: Frenderup, A. Jones, Bateau, Moses, Hodge, Archer, Molino, Rampersad, Hackshaw, J. Jones, Garcia
