Promising young defender Trevoh Chalobah has signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Chelsea on the back of his impressive start to the season, which also saw him make his senior debut for the club. The young English centre-back, who turned 22 in July, has played 10 times under Thomas Tuchel so far this term. Chalobah, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, scored a goal to remember against Crystal Palace on his first appearance at Stamford Bridge. The overwhelming emotion of that goal brought the Academy graduate, who has been at the club since the age of eight, to tears. His fabulous strike sealed a 3-0 win against the Eagles on the opening day of the campaign.

This was the beginning of a great run for the youngster, as he made further Premier League starts against Aston Villa, Southampton, Brentford and Norwich City. He also opened the scoring against the Saints with a stooping header at the back post. Chalobah also enjoyed a full debut in the UEFA Super Cup and his Champions League debut came in Turin away at Juventus in September. After penning his new deal, which runs until 2026 summer, Chalobah was quoted as saying by the club’s website, “It’s quite surreal. It’s a dream for me to sign a new long-term contract for my boyhood club and hopefully the dream continues.”

Chalobah: Consistency now is the key

Chalobah further added: “It’s been an unbelievable start to the season and something I never expected but it just shows that the hard work I’ve put in and going out on loans has paid off. I tried to impress the manager in pre-season and then take that into the games so it’s been good and consistency now is the key to keep those high levels.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “To see Trevoh joining so many of his fellow Academy graduates in the men’s first team is something we are exceptionally proud of as a Club. When he scored in the first game of the Premier League season, it was an emotional moment for everyone involved in his progress to this point.”

“His performances in the early months of the season as well as his attitude and professionalism have impressed us all and we are very pleased to be able to reward Trevoh’s progress with this new long-term contract.”

Thomas Tuchel: It’s a new challenge for Chalobah

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has praised the consistency shown by Trevoh Chalobah so far this season. The 22-year-old has already contributed two Premier League goals and has helped earn the team four clean sheets in his five top-flight starts to date. “His consistency [has impressed me]. He can produce the same performances in different games at this young age,” said Tuchel. “It’s a new challenge for him to be now a regular player for Chelsea.

“He was very strong in pre-season, showed no nerves in the pre-season games and when it came to the first start, he played in Super Cup. That was impressive because he did what he did in the friendlies. This is what I like a lot about him.

“He’s doing his thing and he is not affected in the moment by too much praise or by the pressure that can arise with spectators. He can still and needs to improve in his things. The level he can provide is very high, I’m super happy. He is a calm guy, very focused and knows what he wants.”
