Tottenham Hotspur will host Sporting Lisbon in a UEFA Champions League fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Wednesday night. The hosts are currently occupying top spot in Group D, having collected 7 points from 4 games, while Sporting are sitting at the third position with six points to their name, level on points with second-placed side Marseille, but separated by goal-difference.  Spurs are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United in a Premier League match on Sunday. The visitors, meanwhile, got the better of Casa Pia 3-1 in a Portuguese Primeira Liga game on the same day.

A win on Wednesday will seal Tottneham’s place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Antonio Conte’s side have recorded two wins, one draw and a defeat in their four games thus far. In their latest European match against Eintracht Frankfurt on October 12, Spurs secured a thrilling 3-2 win courtesy of Son Heung-min’s brace and one goal from Harry Kane. After that, Tottenham got the better of Everton (2-0), before suffering back-to-back defeats against Manchester United (2-0) and Newcastle (2-1), in the Premier League fixtures. Spurs are currently sitting in third spot in the English top flight standings, having collected 23 points from 12 games.

Sporting Lisbon, on the other hand, are occupying fourth position in the Portuguese Primeira Liga standings, with 19 points to their name from 10 games. The Green and Whites got the better of Casa Pia in their last outing courtesy of goals from Paulinho, Nuno Santos and Pedro Goncalves. Meanwhile, in the Champions League, the Lions started off with successive wins against Frankfurt and Spurs before losing to Marseille at home and away matches. The reverse fixture against Tottenham last month ended in a dramatic 2-0 win courtesy of late goals from Paulinho and Arthur.
