Tottenham Hotspur edged out a slender 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Watford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. The solitary goal from the London club was scored by attacker Heung Min Son. With the win, Spurs became the only club in the Premier League to have maintained a 100% record so far. It was a game where the hosts created more chances but were just lacking the finishing touch in front of goal. Watford played brilliantly and had a few good moments themselves but it was not meant to be. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side is currently top of the league after what many had predicted would be a disastrous season so far. The wins, however, have been nervy at best.

Son’s goal was directly from a free kick, but he had meant to go for goal. The South Korean was looking for a teammate when he whipped the ball in from the left-hand side. However, nobody got a touch and the flight of the ball deceived the Watford defence and their keeper nestle in the back of the net. The goal came in the 42nd minute, right before half time. It was a lucky goal in many respects but it does not matter how they go in as long as they go in.

The hosts were the dominant side in the game, as predicted. They created 15 chances on goal, of which eight were on target. Watford, on the other hand, created nine attempts on goal but could only manage to keep a couple on target without fruit. The issue for Nuno would be the finishing of his side so far. They only scored once from their eight shots on target and even that was not meant to be a shot on goal. If Harry Kane is to leave Spurs at the end of the season, they would encounter a massive problem going upfront.

SOLID DISPLAY FROM WATFORD

Watford played quite well considering that they were promoted this season and that it was an away match against one of the heavyweights of the division. They did well to keep the score to 1-0 with some exceptional organisational skills. The team looked extremely well-drilled and the backline seemed to know their individual jobs quite well. Overall, it was a performance that the Hornets can take a lot of positives from and look forward to the next.

Spurs will have a tricky test in their following fixture that will take place after the international break. They will travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on September 11. The Eagles have not had the best of starts to the new campaign, picking up only a couple of points from three matches. They will be eager to record their first win of the season and it would be even more special against a bigger side.

Nuno so far has proved his doubters wrong this season with three successive wins in the first month of the new season. He will be the happiest manager heading into the international break. The Portuguese will be hoping that his side will keep up the momentum on the other side of the break if they want to achieve a top-four finish this season.
