Tajikistan went into their round of 16 fixture against UAE, who reached the semi-finals of AFC Asian Cup in 2019, as underdogs, but Asian debutants produced a fine counter-attacking style of football to prevail 5-3 in penalties after the scores were tied 1-1 at the end of 120 minutes of play. The Crowns took the lead through Vakhdat Khanonov’s 30th-minute opener, and just when it looked like they were cruising to a comfortable victory, Khalifa Al Hammadi scored the equaliser for Al-Abyad five minutes into the injury time and forced the game into the extra time. Peter Segrt’s men have suffered only one defeat in their last nine competitive games, conceding a goal or fewer in each of those outings.
Jordan, on the other hand, came from behind to get the better of Iraq in a five-goal thriller at Khalifa International Stadium on Monday. Though the Chivalrous took the lead through Yazan Al-Naimat’s opener on the stroke of half-time, the Iraqi’s came out all guns blazing in the second-half and netted twice thanks to one effort each from Saad Natiq and Aymen Hussein. Meanwhile, the goal-scorer Hussein was immediately sent-off for his wayward celebrations and the Jordanians took full advantage of the man-advantage, finding the back of the net twice in the injury time, thanks to Yazan Al-Arab and Nizar Al-Rashdan. Hussein Ammouta’s side have scored nine goals and conceded five times from their four Asian Cup games this term.
