Syria and India will square off in a do-or-die AFC Asian Cup battle on the final matchday of Group B at Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday. The Eagles of Qasioun are currently occupying third spot group, having taken one pint from two outings, three adrift of second-placed Uzbekistan and five away from leaders Australia, while the Blue Tigers are yet to open their account, having lost their first two fixtures. Meanwhile, the previous meeting between these two sides was way back in 2019 in a friendly, where the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Syria have shown that they are a tough nut to crack from their opening two group fixtures against the likes of Uzbekistan and Australia. The Eagles of Qasioun played out a goalless draw against a much superior, according to FIFA rankings, White Wolves in their opening fixture of the tournament, before producing a solid defensive performance against the Socceroos last time out. On Thursday, Hector Cuper’s side conceded just one effort on target against Graham Arbnold’s men but still lost 1-0. The result extended their winless run to five games in all competitions. Meanwhile, a victory on Tuesday would not only be the first for this nation in the group stage of this tournament since 2011, but it would also ensure they qualify for the last-16 stage.
India, on the other hand, were thrashed 3-0 by Uzbekistan on Thursday. The scoreline doesn’t always tell you the real story, as it is fair to say that the Blue Tigers created good number of goal-scoring chances but were denied by Uzbek custodian Utkir Yusupv’s heroics and the woodwork. Igor Stimac’s men have now lost six of their last seven outings in all competitions, while their last three defeats have come with an aggregate scoreline of 8-0. The SAFF Cup winners need a victory on Tuesday to have any chance of going through to the knockout stage.
