Sunderland started the month of December with a 1-1 draw away to Millwall, before securing back-to-back wins over West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United. The Black Cats recorded their tenth league-win of the campaign against the Whites on December 12 thanks to Jobe Bellingham’s lone goal 12 minutes from time. However, four days later, Sunderland suffered their ninth second tier defeat of the season courtesy of Tommy Conway’s effort from the penalty spot inside the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Black Cats have won four of their last five fixtures at Stadium of Light, scoring ten goals and conceding just five in the process.
Coventry, on the other hand, secured their sixth Championship victory of the season against Birmingham City on December 9 thanks to Callum O Harte’s brace. However, the Sky Blues then registered successive 1-1 draws against the likes of Southampton and Leeds. On Saturday, Mark Robins’ side came from behind to earn a point at third-placed Leeds thanks to Bobby Thomas’ 66th-minute equaliser. Coventry have now collected 11 points from six games, their only defeat coming at second-placed Ipswich Town at the start of this month. Despite being nine points adrift of the playoffs, Robins’ side are on an upward trajectory, and they will move to the brink of a spot in the top half of the table with victory at the weekend.
