Sheriff Tiraspol will host Maribor in the second leg of the Champions League second-round qualifying tie at Zimboru stadium on Tuesday. The first leg in Slovenia ended in a goalless draw, therefore both sides would be desperate to turn their fortunes in the second leg. Sheriff Tiraspol began their summer with a 1-0 aggregate win over Zrinjski in the Champions League first leg qualifying. Igor Savic’s own goal in the second leg proved to be the difference between the two sides after the first leg had ended in a hard-fought goalless draw. The Moldovan champions will once again have to turn the tie around at home to stand a chance of making it through to the group stages for the second year in a row. Sthepan Tomas’ side are yet to concede a goal in 2022-23 Champions League qualifying.
Maribor, on the other hand, reached this far courtesy of a 2-0 aggregate win over Shakhtyor in the first round of the Champions League qualifying. Radovan Karanovic’s side began their domestic league title-defence on July 16 and have played two games so far, recording one win and a defeat. In the last game against ND Gorica, Goals from Roko Baturina, Nino Zugelj and Ivan Brnic helped the Purples take all three points. Maribor already has three Champions League group-stage appearances to their name, the most recent of which came in 2017-18.
Sheriff Tiraspol’s attacking midfielder Iyayi Atiemwen is doubtful because of an injury, while the rest of the squad if fit and available for selection. Yansane is likely to lead the attack with Ouattara and Pernambuco in support. Badolo, Kyabou and Lushkja are likely to form the midfield-trio. As for Maribor, number one goalkeeper Azbe Jug is sidelined alongside Aleks Pihler with injuries. Ignacio Guerrico could be deployed at the right-back position. Aljaz Antolin could join Repas in the midfield. Baturina is expected to be the target-man up front.
