Sheffield Wednesday will host Peterborough United in the second leg of their League One semi-final playoff tie at Hillsborough on Thursday night. Peterborough thrashed the Owls 4-0 in the first leg at ABAX Stadium last weekend, thanks to goals from Jack Taylor, Joe Ward, Kwame Poku and Jonson Clarke-Harris. Not many would have expected Daren Moore’s side, who finished third in the English third tier standings, to succumb to such an unforeseen drubbing, and that too against a team, which only secured a top six spot on the final matchday.

Sheffield Wednesday went in the first first leg on the back of a four-game winning run, conceding just two goals in the process, but the Owls failed to find the back of the net despite creating 14 chances with eight attempts on target. Moore’s men had secured a narrow 1-0 over the Posh when they previously visited Hillsborough for the League One reverse fixture this season, thanks to Jaden Brown’s 60th-minute effort. However, now the Owls need to do the impossible of overturning a four-goal deficit to have any chance of earning promotion to the second tier of English football. Meanwhile, on a positive note, Sheffield Wednesday are undefeated in their last 23 home-fixtures across all competitions, while winning 18 matches in the process.
Peterborough, on the other hand, have won five of their last games on the road. The Posh defeated Barnsley 2-0 on the final matchday, courtesy of goals from Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor to secure a sixth-place finish in the third tier standings. After that, Darren Ferguson’s men put four goals past the Owls to keep foot firmly in the playoff final, where they will meet either Bolton Wanderers of Barnsley. Peterborough have now kept three successive clean sheets since suffering a 3-0 drubbing against Ipswich Town last month. Clarke-Harris is sitting at the summit of the top scorers list with 27 third-tier scalps to his name and Ferguson will be confident of the fact that his side has enough attacking prowess in their ranks to get the job done at Hillsborough on Thursday.
Sheffield Wednesday probable starting lineup: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, Flint, James, Vaulks, Bannan; Windass, Paterson, Johnson, Smith
Peterborough United probable starting lineup: Norris, Ward, Kent, Edwards, Burrows, Kyprianou, Norburn, Poku, Taylor, Mason-Clark, Clarke-Harris
