Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out for three months because of a heart problem. The 33-year-old was admitted to hospital on Saturday after needing to go off in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Alaves in the La Liga fixture. In what was his first start at Camp Nou since arriving on a free transfer this summer, the forward had to be replaced after 41 minutes having felt chest pain and dizziness on the pitch. Although the Argentine had breathing difficulties and dizziness he was able to walk off the pitch on his own to make way for Philippe Coutinho.

A Barcelona statement said: “The player has undergone a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Doctor Josep Brugada and will be out of action during the next three months as the effectiveness of treatment is evaluated.”

The Argentina international spent Sunday and Monday in hospital in Barcelona as extensive cardiac tests were carried out. A preliminary diagnosis has suggested that he suffers from heart arrhythmia.

Aguero joined the Catalan club from Manchester City in August. However he hasn’t been able to make a mark at the new club so far because of injuries. He suffered a strained tendon in his right calf in August, which kept him out for 10 weeks.

On Monday night, the striker tweeted: ‘I am fine and in good spirits to face the recovery process. I want to thank everyone for so many messages of support and affection that make my heart stronger today.’

Barcelona travel to Kyiv with just two senior strikers

Aguero’s absence will be a major blow to Barcelona, who parted ways with head coach Ronal Koeman last week after a poor start to the season.

Barcelona travel to Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday for the Champions League assignment. The Spanish giants have had the worst start to their Champions League campaign ever, losing the opening two matches before beating Dynamo Kyiv at Camp Nou last week.

Therefore they are desperate for a win when they travel to Kyiv to boost their chances of qualifying for the next round from Group E, in which they lie third below Bayern Munich and Benfica.

Speaking ahead of Barca’s Champions League Group E match against Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine on Tuesday, caretaker coach Sergi Barjuan said “I talked to him and he’s calm. He’s confined to his room but considering the situation he’s calm.”

Barcelona will be traveling to Ukraine without a number of their regular players because of injuries. Gerard Pique picked up a calf injury in the match against Alaves, while Martin Braithwaite and Ousmane Dembele are also unavailable. Memphis Depay and Ansu Fati are the only senior forwards available for the match in Ukraine.
