Salernitana began their 2023-24 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ternana in the Coppa Italia first round on August 12, before sharing the spoils against Roma in their opening Serie A-fixture of the season at Stadio Olimpico last time out. Paulo Sosa’s side went behind courtesy of Andrea Belotti’s 17th-minute opener before fighting back to take the lead through veteran Andrea Candreva’s brace, but Belotti’s second of the night eight minutes from time, meant that the points were shared. Granata finished 15th in the Italian top flight last term and will be hoping to challenge for a top-half finish this time around.
Udinese, on the other hand, kicked off their new season with a 4-1 win over Catanzaro in their Coppa Italia opener on August 11, but then suffered a demoralising loss against Juventus in the top flight last time out. The Little Zebras conceded three goals and couldn’t reply in front of their own supporters at Friulli on August 20. Massimiliano Allegri’s side scored three times in the first-half through Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic and Andrien Rabiot. The Black and Whites claimed 12th place in the last two editions of the Serie A, and will be bidding to secure a top-half finish at the end of the current campaign.
