Roma will be aiming to take one step closer to securing back-to-back European titles when they host Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie at Stadio Olimpico on Thursday. Meanwhile, both sides are heading into the match on the back of league-defeats last weekend, with the hosts losing 2-0 to Inter Milan in the Serie A, while Leverkusen suffered a 2-1 Bundesliga-defeat against FC Koln.

Roma reached the UEFA semi-final for the third successive season by beating Feyenoord in the quarter-final clash. Jose Mourinho’s side suffered a narrow 1-0 loss against the Dutch outfit in the first leg, before coming out all guns blazing in the home leg and secured a 4-1 win to go through to the last four stage of Europa League with a 4-2 aggregate victory. Last year’s Europa Conference League winners also overcame RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad to make the Europa League final four. However, the Wolves are winless in their last four Serie A games, losing two in the period. Last time out, Giallorossi lost out to Inter courtesy of goals from Federico Dimarco and Romelu Lukaku. With just two points taken from their last four outings, Mourinho’s side have slipped to the seventh spot in the Italian top flight standings. Meanwhile, Roma’s worst form of 2023 has come at a time when the Rome Club’s squad has been decimated by a series of injuries. On a positive note, the Yellow and Reds have recorded eight wins, two draws and one loss from their last 11 matches across all competitions at Stadio Olimpico.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, are undefeated in their last nine away-games in all competitions, while winning six matches in the period. The German outfit lost out to FC Koln last time out despite the fact that Amine Adli got on the score sheet. The result ended their 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions. As of now, Xabi Alonso’s side are sitting at the sixth spot in the Bundesliga standings, having collected 48 points from 31 games. Meanwhile, when it comes to the continental stage, Leverkusen eliminated Monaco, Ferencvaros and Belgian outfit Union SG to reach the final for of the Europa League.
