Real Madrid welcome Atletico Madrid to Santiago Bernabeu for the eagerly-anticipated Copa del Rey quarterfinal contest. The Thursday night tie will divide the Spanish capital, as both sets of supporters brace themselves for the Madrid derby. The latest instalment of this derby will take place at Santiago Bernabeu, which will undoubtedly give the home team a major boost. However, history has shown that anything is possible in a derby hence the visitors will also back themselves to produce a positive result.

Earlier this season, these two clubs have faced each other in La Liga when Real Madrid edged past Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano. That September contest would still be fresh in the memory of Diego Simeone’s side who will be keen to get revenge this time around. However, they have to be at the top of their game to produce an upset result at Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday night.

Both sides won their respective round-of-16 ties in the Copa del Rey in contrasting fashions. Real Madrid staged an impressive comeback to get past Villarreal 3-2, while Atletico Madrid got the better of Levante 2-0. They are also heading into this game on the back of winning their weekend games. Real produced a solid display to defeat Athletic Bilbao 2-0, while Atletico eased past Valladolid 3-0. Real Madrid are currently sitting second in the table with 41 points from 17 games and Atletico Madrid are placed fourth with 31 points from 18 matches.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid are set to have the majority of injury absentees for this derby. Full-backs Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez will be joined by midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and injury-plagued Eden Hazard on the sidelines. However, the return of David Alaba from injury will be a big boost for the home side. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid will welcome Sergio Reguilon and Stefan Savic into the Starting XI following their recent suspensions. Jose Gimenez’s participation though is in doubt, however, new recruit Memphis Depay could be in line to make his first start for Atletico.
