A late Borja Iglesias penalty helped the Green and Whites secure 1-0 win over Getafe when the clubs locked horns in the reverse fixture back in January.
Relegation-threatened Getafe will travel to Benito Villamarin on Wednesday night to take on European hopefuls Real Betis in a La Liga fixture. The hosts are currently occupying sixth spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 56 points from 35 games, juts four adrift of fifth-placed Villarreal. The visitors, meanwhile, are languishing at the 18th position, with 35 points to their name, three behind 17th-placed Real Valladolid, who have played a game more. A late Borja Iglesias penalty helped the Green and Whites secure 1-0 win over Getafe when the clubs locked horns in the reverse fixture back in January.
Real Betis are heading into the match on the back of a goalless draw against Europa League finalists Sevilla in the Seville derby at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday. The Green and Whites failed to register even a single shot on target in the entire 90 minutes of play, while Sevilla, who came into the match on the back of Europa League success over Juventus in the semi-final clash on Thursday night, tested Claudio Bravo on several occasions and played the final few minutes with a man advantage following Juan Miranda’s sending-off. The result extended Los Verdiblanoc’s unbeaten run to three games, winning two fixtures in the process, against Athletic Bilbao (1-0) and Rayo Vallecano (3-1). Betis secured their 16th league-win of the season against Rayo almost ten days ago courtesy of goals from Youssouf Sabaly, Ayoze Perez and Iglesias. Since Manuel Pellegrini’s men are sitting six points clear of sixth-placed Athletic Bilbao and four points adrift of fifth-placed Villarreal, Betis’ grip on the Europa League spot will not be affected no matter what transpires in mid-week. Meanwhile, The Greens have lost only once of their last seven league-matches at Benito Villamarin, while recording four victories in the process.
Getafe, on the other hand, failed to get the better of an already-relegated Elche side last time out, despite taking the lead through despite taking the lead through Munir EL Haddadi’s eighth-minute effort. Lucas Boye’s bullet header on the stroke of half-time handed Jose Bordalas’s side their 11 league-draw of the season. Prior to that, the Azulones suffered their 16th top flight defeat of the season away to Real Madrid following a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo, which was their ninth La Liga-victory of the campaign. Meanwhile, Getafe enter Wednesday’s game on the back of four successive away defeats to Sociedad, Mallorca, Espanyol and Los Blancos, scoring just one goal in the process.
