RB Leipzig will host Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final fixture on Wednesday. Both sides are heading the match on the back of Bundesliga-defeats this weekend, with the hosts being thrashed 3-0 by Mainz, while Dortmund were beaten 4-2 by Bayern Munich. As of now BVB are occupying second spot in the German top flight standings, having collected 53 points from 26 games, just two adrift of leaders Bayern. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting three places behind Dortmund, trailing by eight points.

Leipzig, the reigning DFB-Pokal champions, overcame the likes of Teutonia Ottensen, Hamburger SV and Hoffenheim to reach the last eight of the competition this season. The Red Bulls defeated Hoffenhein 3-1 in the round of 16, thanks to goals from Emil Forsberg, Konrad Laimer and Timo Werner. Meanwhile, Marco Rose’s side are heading into the match, on the back of a three-game losing streak across all competitions, while conceding 11 goals and scoring none during that period. On a positive note, Leipzig have prevailed in three of their last four encounters against Dortmund. But the latest clash against BVB at the start of March ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Dortmund secured all three points against Leipzig at Signal Iduna Park last month, courtesy of first-half efforts from Marco Reus and Emre Can. On Saturday, BVB suffered their first league-defeat since the turn of the year against Bayern, despite the fact that Can and Donyell Malen netted in the second-half. Despite the defeat Edin Terzic’s side remain firmly in the title-race as they trail the leaders by just two points. Meanwhile BVB have enjoyed success in the domestic cup competition, winning the trophy five times, with the latest triumph coming in the 2020-21 season.
