Manchester United are moving closer to bringing in the Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to an Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio. The Frenchman will reportedly undergo a medical test for Manchester United in the coming days. Varane’s decade-long stint with the Spanish giants might be coming to an end. He has won every single trophy up for grabs with the Los Blancos. It has been speculated for some time now that the 28-year-old is embarking on a new challenge this summer.

Varane has been a crucial part of the La Liga side alongside the veteran Sergio Ramos in the central defence for the last many years. Ramos left Madrid and joined PSG a few weeks ago and now with the departure of Varane almost looking certain Real Madrid have got to fill in those gaps in the backline. The Frenchman who played all four matches for his country in the Euro 2020 has made 350 appearances for Real Madrid.

Varane is the perfect option for United

On the other hand, Manchester United are looking for a world-class defender to partner captain Harry Maguire and Varane looks the perfect option. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished the last Premier League season behind only champions Manchester City and are now getting themselves ready to improve their title hopes. Central defender Victor Lindelof, who had a very good Euro 2020 for Sweden, has been hot and cold for United and also has some back issues. Meanwhile, Eric Bailly is also dealing with fitness issues therefore the Frenchman’s arrival will be a huge boost for the English club.

According to reports from reliable David Ornstein, the defender will sign a four-year deal. And as reports suggest the deal would be worth around GBP 42 million with add-ons. United have already brought in English star Jadon Sancho for GBP 73 million from Borussia Dortmund this summer and the acquisition of Varane would be a further statement of intent from the Red Devils.

If the deal goes through, Varane will be in line to make his first competitive appearance for the English club on August 14 against Leeds United.
