Chelsea emerged victorious in a thrilling five-goal contest 3-2 against Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday. A penalty in the 94th minute gave Jorginho the opportunity to win the match and the Italian did his job. Steven Gerrard’s Anfield return did not go to plan as Liverpool beat a spirited Aston Villa side 1-0. The win saw them in second place on the table, just a point behind leaders Manchester City. Their London rivals Arsenal had an easier time as they dispatched Southampton 3-0 to move up to fifth place on the league table.

FIVE-GOAL THRILLER

Chelsea and Leeds United played out an absolute thriller of a contest as the match at Stamford Bridge ended 3-2. Marcus Alonso made a lazy challenge inside the box and caught Daniel James. VAR awarded a penalty and Raphinha made it 1-0 to the visitors in the 28th minute.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Alonso amended his earlier error as he won the ball down the line and delivered a fine cross for Mount charges to fire home and make it 1-1. The Blues were then awarded a penalty and Jorginho made it 2-1 in the 58th minute. In the 83rd minute, Marcelo Bielsea’s team were level again thanks to a maiden Premier League goal by Joe Gelhardt.

There was sheer drama in stoppage time as Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger won a penalty thanks to a reckless tackle by Klich. Jorginho stepped up yet again and remained composed under immense pressure to bag the winning goal for the Blues in the 94th minute.

STEVEN GERRARD’S ANFIELD RETURN

New Aston Villa boss Gerrard received a huge cheer from the crowd as he walked onto the Anfield turf. For the most part of the game, his team played with grit, courage, and intensity, a lot like himself. Villa quelled wave after wave of Liverpool attacks that were being egged on by the home crowd. Tyrone Mings seemed especially outstanding as he was crucial in blocking almost every Liverpool attempt.

However, a costly mistake by the England international in the second half saw the game slip away. Mings brought down Mohammed Salah inside the penalty box to hand Liverpool a penalty. Salah blasted the ball past Emi Martinez in front of the Kop End and that one goal went on to decide the tie.

ARSENAL COMFORTABLE VICTORS

While Liverpool and Chelsea had to get the job done the hard way, Arsenal had a pretty comfortable day at the office. The Gunners recorded a dominant 3-0 win over Southampton to move to fifth on the table. It was a much needed result for Mikel Arteta after successive losses against Manchester United and Everton.

French striker Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring in the 21st minute. The Emirates stadium was treated to Arsenal’s second goal only six minutes later when former Real Madrid player Martin Odegaard made it 2-0. An unlikely scorer in the form of defender Gabriel scored the Gunners’ third goal to ensure a comfortable victory.
