The contract situation between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Joao Moutinho continues to drag on with no decision reached till now. The Portuguese midfielder’s contract is due to expire this summer. It has prompted the media to speculate about his future, with some outlets stating that the 35-year-old midfielder could leave the Molineux this window. Wolves have issues of their own, with another midfielder in Ruben Neves also being heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer.

When Moutinho recently linked up with the Portuguese national team, his future at Wolves was one of the topics discussed during a press conference. “I have always worked the same way, with or without a contract,” Moutinho said the reporters (via Mais Futebol). “We had a good season at the club, now I’m focused on making my contribution to the success of the national team, the other things will be resolved in due course.”

After arriving at Wolves in 2018 from Monaco, Joao Moutinho has gone on to be a regular for the club. Lately, the Portuguese duo of Moutinho and Neves have formed a solid partnership in the team’s midfield. Together, they both have played an important role in the team’s success in the Premier League. The veteran midfielder – in particular – has made 176 appearances for the club in four seasons across all competition. Despite his age, he continues to be a key part of the team.

Midfield duo of Moutinho and Neves’ future unclear

Either way, some reports have indicated that Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha could replace Moutinho if he does not extend his contract at Molineux this summer. Meanwhile, it could be a big blow if both their key midfielders – Moutinho and Neves – leave the club in this window. Rumours have been gathering pace about several top clubs interested in Neves’ services. Manchester United, Barcelona and Arsenal are among the teams reportedly keeping an eye on the 25-year-old midfielder.

Speaking about it, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ technical director Scott Sellars recently said he would ideally want to keep hold of Ruben Neves. “Ruben’s a top player; Ruben’s been fantastic this season and I think showed again his quality, also I think showed how happy he is here, so I think that’s something we as a club know as well. The ideal situation is we want him to stay, and I’ve spoken to him about it. But I’m also realistic that when you’ve got an outstanding player then the top clubs are going to come and try to see what the situation is. Again, it will be discussed, and what’s right for the club, and will certainly be something we’ll look at,” he told the club media.
