European champions Chelsea played out a lethargic 0-0 draw at the Molineux Stadium against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Chelsea struggled to get into the game against a spirited Wolves team, who will be disappointed to only take one point. Thomas Tuchel was forced to field a relatively depleted side as the club is currently in a troublesome situation with some members testing positive for COVID-19. The Premier League had denied the club’s request of postponing the match.

The hosts dominated the majority of the game but lacked a cutting edge in attack, with Thomas Tuchel’s side’s best chance coming from Christian Pulisic’s second-half strike, which was superbly saved by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Chelsea fielded a depleted team on Sunday, with eight senior players reportedly out due to injury or testing positive for COVID-19, and only four outfield players on the bench. They confirmed an hour before kickoff that a request to postpone the game had been denied by the Premier League.

Wolves made a strong start and appeared to go ahead in the 14th minute when Daniel Podence slotted home a Marcal cross, but the goal was disallowed because Raul Jimenez interfered with play.

Throughout the first half, the hosts continued to cause problems for Chelsea, with Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker both going close, while the visitors struggled to create chances at the other end of the pitch. Chelsea improved significantly after the break, but failed to test Sa until Pulisic’s chance in the 78th minute.

MANCHESTER CITY RUN RIOT AT ST. JAMES’ PARK

Table-toppers Manchester City delivered a spectacular performance as they thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 at St James’ Park. The men in blue have now won eight successive Premier League matches and are four points clear at the top.

Joao Cancelo scored one and assisted another as they defeated the struggling Magpies. The win ensures that Pep Guardiola’s men will spend Christmas Day atop the Premier League. In the fifth minute, Cancelo acrobatically crossed for Ruben Dias to head into an empty net following a mix-up between Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and defender Ciaran Clarke.

Cancelo scored the team’s second goal in the 27th minute, cutting in from the right wing and finishing a solo run with a stunning strike that silenced the home crowd.

VAR was called into action for City’s third goal. Oleksandr Zinchenko played a brilliant ball that was met by Riyadh Mahrez and slotted past the goalkeeper. However, the Algerian international was called offside by the linesman. A VAR check showed that Mahrez was onside and CIty were three to the good.

Raheem Sterling scored the final goal of the match and it was a beautiful thing to watch. Gabriel Jesus picked the ball up on the byline and played an outstanding pass to the England international. It was a simple effort for Sterling into an empty net.
