Panama had a strong CONCACAF Nations League campaign, securing top spot in Group B of League A having gone unbeaten in four games. After picking up seven points from the opening three games in 2022, they returned to the final meeting with Costa Rica, knowing that a draw was enough to take them through to the semi-finals, but Thomas Christiansen’s men triumphed at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica thanks to Jose Fajarado’s lone goal in the second half. And they now turn their focus to the upcoming semi-final clash against Canada in Nevada next week. With the Gold Cup also coming in June, Los Canaleros will be keen to build some momentum with a friendly win on home soil on Saturday before traveling to USA for the Nations League finals.
Nicaragua, on the other hand, also finished the Nations League at the top of their group in March, taking 14 points from their six Group C games of League B. After thrashing Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 4-1, thanks to goals from Ariagner Smith, Juan Barrera, Matias Belli and Francisco Flores, the Pinoleros needed just a point with their final match against Trinidad & Tobago to win the group and they did just that at Dwight Yorke Stadium. Smith would put the Blue and Whites ahead in the 27th-minute but Joevin Jones’s 42nd-minute equalsier from the penalty spot meant that the points were shared in Tobago.
