Manchester City’s bid to reach the summit in the Premier League table got stronger with the club registering another crucial win at the weekend. After being involved in a hectic three-way title race with Liverpool and Arsenal, Man City know that they have to take their chances. Any slip could allow the other teams to leapfrog them and race ahead. Fortunately for their supporters, City did what was expected of them.

They won back-to-back games in the Premier League by beating Aston Villa 4-1 and Crystal Palace 4-2. It has kept them in touching distance of the top spot. In their latest win over Palace, Manchester City did a lot of good things to come from behind and register three crucial points. There were plenty of positives to take from that result. From Kevin De Bruyne’s impressive brace to Haaland’s scoring form, it was a job well done for the side from Manchester.

What does Rico Lewis make about playing in midfield?

However, one of the standout positives was the performance of Rico Lewis. Not only did the 19-year-old score a goal but he also produced an eye-catching display playing in midfield. Inverted from his usual right-back position, Lewis had a game to remember. “I enjoy playing in midfield the most. As a kid you want to get goals and assists, that’s what you see on TV. That’s what I want to be in the future, but the manager decides where I’m most effective,” Lewis, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

The teenager spoke about the importance of getting the three points in a difficult ground such as the Selhurst Park. “It’s a difficult place to come. We thank them so much [the fans] because they mean so much to us. To get a result like this today is amazing, not just for us but for them as well. The main message was to keep on going and keep persisting, because we have to keep going and most of our games will be like this, where we control the game and the opposition sit deep,” he explained.

The full-back added: “The chances will come. The message was to get in the box and that’s what I did today. As a kid you dream of scoring a goal and celebrating. This season I’ve played more in midfield so I want more goals and assists. Yeah of course, just like every other title race [every game is a must win]. We have to win every game and there are three teams in it, so we have to be the strongest team. This team has done it so many times, we have the experience and I’m sure we’ll kick on and do it again.”

Lewis then went on to shower praise on his teammate Ruben Dias. The Portuguese centre-back has been an important part of City’s setup after joining them in 2020. Lewis, particularly, heaped praise on Dias’ leadership skills. “Ruben [Dias] – his mentality is the biggest asset that’s so clear and one of the best in the world in how he leads everyone. He looks at himself first before he looks at everyone else. He leads by example,” he elaborated.
