Spectators at the Aviva Stadium were treated with a thrilling end-to-end encounter on Thursday. Ireland raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 17 minutes courtesy of efforts from Callum O’Dowda and Even Ferguson, before Latvia puled one back through Roberts Uldrikis’ stunning long-ranger strike. Although Arturs Zjuzins made the score 2-2 on the stroke of half-time, substitute Chiedozie Ogbene’s 65th minute effort helped Ireland secure the win. The victory was certainly a boost for the Boys in Green ahead of starting their bid to reaching the continental finals for the fourth time.
France, on the other hand, secured a dominant win in their first match under their 24-year-old new captain Kylian Mbappe on Friday night. Les Blues put four goals past Netherlands without reply at Stade de France, courtesy of Mbappe’s brace and one goal each from Antoine Griezmann and Dayot Upamecano. The Dutch won a last-minute penalty but Memphis Depay failed to get the better of France’s new number one Mike Maignan. The 2022 World Cup runner-ups have never lost to Ireland since the 2-1 defeat in a 1982 World Cup qualifier and will be aiming to secure a third consecutive win against the Boys in Green and conclude the international break as Group B leaders.
