Although it was Newcastle United who controlled the game in the initial phase, but as the match progressed, United started to get a stranglehold of things. Wout Weghorst registered the first shot on target inside the opening 12 minutes, but the United striker’s effort lacked venom to test Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius. On the half-hour mark, at the other end, Allan Saint-Maximin produced a fine piece of skill to get the better of United right-back Diogo Dalot and make space for himself inside the box, but the Frenchman’s effort was blocked by David de Gea at the neat post.
Three minutes later, United full-back Luke Shaw delivered a stunning free-kick from the left flank, and Casemiro timed his run to perfection to head home from inside the box. There was a VAR check but the Brazilian was ruled to be narrowly onside. Six minutes later, the lead was doubled as Rashford combined with Weghorst before driving into the box and seeing his shot deflect off Botman before looping over Karius and into the back of the net. It was the Englishman’s 25th goal for United across all competitions this season. And then, on the stroke of half-time, Weghorst tested Karius with a long-ranger.

After the break, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe brought in Alexander Isak to try to help turn the tide but failed to break a watertight United defence. Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro were not hesitant to put their body on the line as they made some crucial blocks to deny Joelinton. Meanwhile Rashford and Wan-Bissaka tested Karius at the other end. The Red Devils could have added a third in the stoppage time as counter saw Bruno Fernandes race through, but was denied by Karius in a one-on-one situation.
