Juventus didn’t have the best of preparations heading into the Europa League tie, as they were beaten 1-0 by AS Roma in the Italian top flight on Sunday. The result ended Bianconeri’s eight-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Massimiliano Allegri’s side were initially involved in the UEFA Champion League during the first half of the season, but finished third in their group and had to settle for a place in Europa League playoff. The Old Lady were held to a 1-1 draw by Nantes in the first leg of their last-32 tie, but secured a dominant 3-0 win in France in the away leg, thanks to Angel di Maria’s hat-trick, and progressed to the round of 16 stage.
Freiburg, on the other hand, recorded four wins and two wins from six group-stage games to collect 14 points, five more than second-placed Nantes in Group G and progressed to the last-16 stage. The Bresigau-Bresilianer are one of only three teams to go undefeated through the group phase, while only Real Sociedad have conceded fewer goals than Christian Streich’s side in the Europa League this season. Meanwhile, Freiburg are heading into the match on the back of a goalless draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in the league. They have now collected 42 points from 23 German top flight games, level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig.
