England will be aiming to continue their impressive start to the Euro 2024 qualification campaign when they host Ukraine in their second Group C match at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The Three Lions defeated the reigning champions Italy 2-1 in Naples on Thursday, while the visitors are kickstarting their bid to earn a spot in the continental competition in Germany. Meanwhile the previous encounter between these two nations was in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 and the match ended 4-0 in favour of Gareth Southgate’s side, courtesy of Harry Kane’s brace and one goal each from Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire.

England displayed a very professional counter-attacking football to get the better of Italy at Diego Maradona Stadium on Thursday. Declan Rice put the Three Lions in front inside the opening 13 minutes, before Kane doubled the lead from the penalty spot, on the stroke of half-time. Although Roberto Mancini’s side pulled one back through Mateo Retegui’s 56th-minute effort, England held on to the slender lead and secured all three points. Meanwhile Gareth Southgate’s side ended the match with 10 men after Luke Shaw was sentoff ten minutes from time. England have faced Ukraine eight times in the past, winning five, drawing twice and losing only once.
Ukraine, on the other hand, are set to compete in their first competitive match since the goalless draw away to Scotland in the UEFA Nations League back in September last year. The Blue and Yellow had a decent Nations League campaign, recording three wins, two draws and one defeat from six games to collected 11 points and secure second spot in League B Group 1, just two points adrift of Scotland. Meanwhile Oleksandr Petrakov stepped down as Ukraine national team’s head coach in January and now under the tutelage of Ruslan Rotan the Blue and Yellow will begin their quest to qualify for the Euros for the fourth time in a row.
