Newell’s Old Boys will play hosts to Argentinos Juniors in an Argentine Primera Division fixture at the Estadio Marcelo Alberto Biesla on Monday. Both teams are heading into the tie on the back of victories. The home side secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Talleres Cordoba in their previous match, while the visitors defeated Independiente 2-1 in their last outing. Argentinos Juniors are on a three-game winning streak against La Lepra an Pechofrios and will be hoping to keep the juggernaut rolling. 

Newell’s Old Boys have made a fine start to the new Primera Division campaign, winning two of their three opening games. In their last outing against Talleres, on Tuesday, Raniro Sordo’s goal inside the opening minute was enough to separate the two sides and earn three points for the Newell’s Old Boys. Javier Sanguinetti’s side began their campaign with a 2-1 win at Banfield before returning home to play out a goalless draw against San Lorenzo six days later. Newell’s Old Boys are unbeaten in their last six home games in the league. 

Argentinos Juniors, on the other hand, started their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Aldosivi before losing 1-0 to Sarmeinto. Gabriel Milito’s side got back to winning ways last time out when they edged past Independiente. Thiago Nuss opened the scoring for the home side before Leandro Benegas leveled the score for Independiente. Fausta Vera found the back of the net eight minutes into the second half to secure all three points for Argentinos Juniors. In the opening three games, Argentinos Juniors have scored four times, while conceding thrice. El Bicho have failed to taste victory in six consecutive away games. 

Probable Lineups

Newell’s Old Boys’ veteran midfielder Pablo Perez is sidelined with a muscle strain. Sordo, who has netted twice in the last three games, should lead the attack alongside Gonzalez and Garcia. As for Argentinos Juniors, Pablo Minissale is nursing a meniscus injury. Gabriel Florentin is also facing an injury issue but is expected to be fit for the encounter and if he is unable to recover in time, Gaston Veron will push for a starting role in the forward line.
