Juventus on Tuesday (August 31) announced the re-signing of Moise Kean from Everton on a two-year loan deal worth 7 million euros. Kean, who had left Juventus to join Everton in the summer of 2019, thus rejoins the side he left. Kean had cost Everton a sum of 25 million pounds when he signed for them from Juventus.

However, he struggled to adapt at the Merseyside club. He eventually found himself behind Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the pecking order and left the club on loan last season.

His loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain was successful and he was keen to join them on a permament deal. PSG too looked likely to secure his services at one point.

However, the signing of Lionel Messi means there is now no need for Keane. As such, the forward ended up rejoining Juve as a replacement for – ironically – Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juve confirmed Kean’s arrival in an official statement. “Juventus Football Club announces that it has reached an agreement with Everton for the acquisition, on a temporary basis until 30 June 2023, of the player Moise Kean.

“The agreement provides for the obligation on the part of Juventus to definitively acquire the right to the player upon achieving certain sporting objectives during the 2022-23 season.

“The agreed consideration for the acquisition is 28m euros, payable in three financial years. In addition, cumulative bonuses of up to 3m euros upon the achievement of further objectives.”

Why were Everton keen to sell Moise Kean?

Given Kean is young and has plenty of upside, holding on to him would have made some sense. However, the player himself was keen to leave a club where he only scored 4 goals.

There’s also the fact he was on significant wages, something Everton wanted off their books so as to free up more money to spend on newer additions.

All in all, it’s a good deal for both sides. Kean returns to the club where he made a positive impact before being forced to leave. And Everton will eventually get a nice little fee for a player they didn’t want to keep.

Juventus also needed someone to fill the void that Ronaldo had left. Obviously Kean is no like for like replacement. But he is a pure centre-forward with plenty of room for improvement in the future.

Can more additions be expected?

Neither Everton nor Juventus seem likely to add any more players at this point. Juventus are in a better financial state than Everton but are not willing to spend unless absolutely necessary.

Everton, on the other hand, have spent heavily in recent years but are now being circumspect. The reason for this is the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on all clubs.

Everton, like other teams, saw a loss of matchday revenue due to playing matches behind closed doors. They had also invested heavily in the past two seasons and would not want to fall afoul of the Premier League’s FFP rules.

This is despite the fact that FFP has been relaxed for the past two seasons.

Juventus, meanwhile, are also feeling the effects of the COVID pandemic – and also the failed European Super League bid.

The club are reportedly planning to move towards a more sustainable model in the future.
