Edinson Cavani scored a second half brace as Uruguay defeated Mexico 3-0 in an international friendly in Arizona on Thursday night. It was a dominant performance from La Celeste and Gerardo Martino’s side struggled to cope with Uruguay’s high-intensity game plan. Meanwhile Mexico failed to pose any serious threat at the opposition goal. Matias Vecino opened the scoring from a set-piece situation in the first half before Cavani scored twice after the break to seal the win. Uruguay showed that they are ready for big things ahead of Qatar 2022.

Vecino’s opener

Diego Alonso’s men started the match positively and put pressure on their opponents straight away. Uruguay’s Facundo Pellistri made a darting down the right flank before trying to cut the ball back for Cavani inside the box, the defender managed to block the cross and the ball fell to Vecino. The inter Milan midfielder’s initial attempt was blocked, but then Federico Valverde’s powerful left-footed strike from the rebound struck the woodwork. La Celeste took the lead in the 35th minute. In a corner kick, Mexico goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera made a good reflex save to deny Cavani’s header but the El Tri defence allowed a second attempt and Vecino managed to slot home. It was the 30-year-old’s 4th international goal.

Mexico’s poor game-plan and Cavani’s goal

Mexico had a poor first-half. Martino changed the formation of four defenders for a line of five, with two defenders and three men in attack. This game plan made confusion among the Mexicans and they looked out of ideas for most of the game. Meanwhile striker Raul Jimenez had just one play in the entire opening half, and wasted his shot by sending it too wide. After the break, Uruguay continued to push forward for the second and deservedly got it in the 46th-minute.  As soon as the whistle blew for the restart, Pellistri, who was causing all sorts of problems to the Mexican defence, brilliantly went past two defenders down the right flank before delivering a low cross for an unmarked Cavani. The former PSG-man placed the ball past Talavera into the back of the net.

Cavani has scored 56 international goals

Eight minutes after the goal, Cavani completed his brace to make the score 3-0. Damian Suarez played the ball to Cavani, whose first-time shot from outside the box went past Talavera into the bottom corner. It was the 35-year-old’s 56th international goal in 131 appearances for La Celeste. After the third goal, Alonso sent a line of five in his defence, while Mexico couldn’t take anything from the match despite the introduction of Hector Herrera and Jesus Gallardo. El Tri will play an additional US-based friendly this month against Ecuador on June 5 in Chicago before kicking off their 2022-23 Nations League campaign against Suriname on June 11 and away against Jamaica on June 14.
