Honduras is on the brink of potentially causing one of the most significant upsets in CONCACAF Nations League knockout stage history as they head to Estadio Azteca for the second leg of their quarter-final clash with Mexico on Tuesday. In the initial leg on Friday, La H surprised the reigning Gold Cup champions by securing a 2-0 win, positioning themselves just one game away from securing a spot in the Copa America next year.

Following a surprising loss on Friday, Mexico faces the prospect of missing the semi-finals in a CONCACAF tournament for the first time since the 2005 Gold Cup, ending an 11-match quarter-final streak at either that competition or the Nations League. Before their recent defeat, El Tri had an unbeaten run of 26 competitive matches against Central American sides, with the last loss occurring against Honduras in 2017. Since winning their ninth Gold Cup last summer, Jaime Lozano’s team has won just one of their last five matches in all competitions. Despite their generally strong record at Estadio Azteca, Mexico has been less convincing in recent matches, scoring one goal or fewer in three of their last five games at the historic stadium. The 2013 loss to Honduras is the only instance in over 27 years where Mexico conceded a goal at home against La H, with the previous occurrence in November 1996 resulting in a 3-1 win for Mexico. El Tri has conceded multiple goals in four of their last five matches, remaining winless in their last 16 games when conceding in the opening half.

Entering the competition with just one win in six competitive fixtures, few expected Honduras to be in a strong position for the semi-finals. Their 2-0 triumph in the opening leg extended their Nations League home winning streak to four matches, outscoring opponents 12-1 since the 2022-23 tournament. It marked their first quarter-final victory at a CONCACAF tournament in over a decade and the first time they scored against and defeated Mexico since October 2017. Under Reinaldo Rueda, Honduras has a robust defense, conceding only once in his six competitive matches in charge with five clean sheets. Although they lost both away matches against North American opponents in this tournament, Honduras secured a historic 2-1 victory over Mexico at Estadio Azteca in 2013. Seven of their eight victories in this tournament occurred when leading at halftime.
