Diogo Jota was happy with Liverpool’s mentality in the 3-1 win on Thursday night, as the Reds stayed in touching distance of the Premier League title race. He felt that the Reds will need more of the resolve they showed to come back and beat Newcastle United. Liverpool FC trailed seven minutes into Thursday night’s Premier League clash with the Magpies, but Jota swiftly equalised after Jonjo Shelvey’s opener. Not long after, Mohamed Salah put the home side in front. An eighth consecutive victory was sealed through a thunderous strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold on 87th-minute. The Portuguese forward was happy with how the home side dug in to clinch three more points.

“Today even more because we were 1-0 down, so I think the mentality of the team was great. And this is what we need for the future,” Jota told Liverpoolfc.com at Anfield. “[It was] very, very tough. They are fighting for their lives and we knew that. Unfortunately for us, they scored with the first shot, that was a really bad moment for us. But I’m happy we could bounce back straight away. We scored three and we could have scored more, but the most important thing is the three points.”

Salah’s neat finish on Thursday increased his tally for the season to a staggering 22 goals. The Egyptian is also on a run of scoring or assisting in each of his last 15 Premier League appearances – equal with Jamie Vardy for the best such streak ever in the competition.

“It’s unbelievable, he’s getting at least one goal a game or an assist,” said Jota. “It will be important for us and I hope he can continue like that because it would be really good for us.”

Jota on Alexander-Arnold’s goal

Alexander-Arnold’s thunderous strike from 25 yards whistling past Martin Dubravka at the Kop end was the highlight of the match. “What a strike! We know his ability, his technique so we always can expect these kinds of things from him,” added Jota. “I was going for the rebound in case it happened but it’s in the top corner – you don’t save those.”

Meanwhile, manager Jurgen Klopp – in the post-match press conference – touched on several points, including having to work hard for the three points. Asked about Liverpool ‘putting a lot in’ to get the three points, he replied, “No problem with that, that’s the Premier League. The opponent is obviously fighting for staying in the league, put everything in, threw everything on the pitch, had a very defensive organisation, went 1-0 up – so this is the recipe for a difficult game. But we still won it – absolutely deserved and that’s it pretty much.”

Then the attention shifted to Alexander-Arnold’s stunning goal, as Klopp heaped praise on the right-back. “I thought it was the best long ball we played today! Absolutely crazy goal. His shooting technique is really different level and really cool to watch. In a situation like that, having the positivity and optimism to do it is, again, the basis for these kind of goals. So, well done,” he explained.
