After completing a sensational hat-trick for Chelsea in the Premier League, Mason Mount said that he will remember this moment for a long time. Nearly six months and 25 games for club and country later, Mount was back on the scoresheet on Saturday. It was some way for the English midfielder to end his barren run in front of goal. On Saturday, he sublimely put Chelsea ahead against Norwich City with a neat finish from the edge of the box. Mount then netted two very late goals to complete a maiden hat-trick in Chelsea colours. He played a major part in the Blues registering a thumping 7-0 victory against Norwich.

Mount had achieved that feat for both Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County during his loan spells in those clubs. However, he had not managed even a brace in a Blue jersey until Saturday. “I felt like I was getting in the positions to score, but I wasn’t putting it in the back of the net,” Mount was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

“I thought there was going to be a game when it was going to come off, and that was it! Before the game I put pressure on myself to get on the scoresheet because it’s been quite a long time since I did, and then three come around in the same game!

“I don’t think I’ve ever scored more than one in a game for Chelsea so it’s a massive moment for me to get three, and I’ll remember this one for a long time. To score three at home at Stamford Bridge is special. The ball will be up in the house somewhere, definitely. I’ll be framing it, framing the shirt and keeping it for memories.”

Mount on his penalty

Mount’s second goal of the evening came from a penalty spot, but it had its own controversial moments. Tim Krul saved his spot-kick but had left his line too early in doing so, giving the 22-year-old another chance from 12 yards. In the second time of asking, Mount made no mistake in putting it away.

“The first penalty was awful, it was nowhere near the corner. I think luck was on my side, I got to take it again. It’s a strange one because you don’t want to go the same way, so I just thought I would go down the middle.

‘The third goal I thought might have been offside when I looked up and saw the check, I was praying and it was my lucky day. The team as well, it’s not just about me, the way we started. I spoke before the game about intensity, the early kick-off, being at it from the beginning, and we were. We were on it throughout the whole game, even being up going into the second half, we never stopped, we never dropped our standards.”

Hudson-Odoi: We wanted to make a statement

Callum Hudson-Odoi also added his name to the list of Chelsea’s goalscorers on Saturday against Norwich. “We came with the right mindset,” reflected Hudson-Odoi. “We knew we wanted to win the game trying to make a statement there as well. We’re trying to score goals and trying to create as much as possible but at the back it’s a clean sheet so we did really well.

“All of us know how each other plays,” he added. “We knew we had to combine as we do in training. Norwich were sitting back a bit. It could have been difficult but we found a way through and obviously it is good that we got the seven goals.”

Hudson-Odoi was one of the front-three on Saturday rather than in the wing-back role. “My aim when playing in the front three is to score goals and make assists but contributing to the team as much as possible will help me no matter what. So I think to myself that I’ve got to work hard, keep improving, keep showing the work off the ball as well, but it is helping by scoring and making assists as well.

“That is my favourite position, I’ve always played there. No matter where I play I will give my best whatever position it is but I feel most comfortable there. I have been playing there all my life so I know the position very well.”
