Manchester United and Liverpool came up with a game for the ages, as the FA Cup quarter-final tie had seven goals between them during the 120 minutes of an action-packed encounter. In the end, United prevailed by winning the classic 4-3 in front of a loud Old Trafford crowd. The supporters would have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions in a game that was not separated during the normal 90 minutes and required an additional 30 minutes of action.

Liverpool twice led the game. They were leading the tie for most of the second half but Antony equalised to make it 2-2 and took the game into extra time. The visitors once again took the lead in the additional 30 minutes before Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo scored to clinch the memorable FA Cup win for Manchester United. Not many expected the game to reach such heights. Besides, Liverpool were believed to be the favourites but United kept fighting till the end to get the job done.

Antony on his late equaliser

Antony, who scored the equaliser just before 90 minutes, came on as a winger before being converted to a make-shift left-back in extra time. After the match, the Brazilian informed that he has been working on his right leg in training. “It was a very important goal, it gave us the chance to go to extra-time and try to win. Personally, it was a very important moment for me, I needed that goal. At no point did I stop thinking about it and working,” Antony, quoted on the club’s website, said after the quarter-final.

He added: “It’s games like this that show our values and I believe this will motivate everyone for the season. It was a game that we had to help in every way and I managed to score the equaliser. I have also been training my right leg, to make it better and I have done my best to help in the defence, acting as a winger. It was a time for everyone to donate, whatever their position. We came together there and achieved an incredible turnaround.”

It has not been easy for Antony this season. He has struggled for form and has also lost his right-wing position to Alejandro Garnacho in the Starting XI. “It has been a period of a lot of learning. I try to learn from each criticism, understand where I can improve. I have been working silently to evolve and show my football on the field. I know my potential and I know why Manchester United hired me. I want to repay all of this on the field. My team-mates are giving me a lot of confidence, my family too. This is important and gives me a lot of confidence. In the opportunity the coach gave me, I managed to be decisive and help. I’m grateful to Manchester United, it was my lifelong dream to be here,” he explained.
