It is fair to say that the 2023-24 campaign has largely been a disappointing one for Manchester United. The Red Devils got eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage and suffered an early exit from the Carabao Cup despite being its defending champions. They are equally struggling in the Premier League, with the club sitting far behind in the race to finish in the top four positions.

A lot has not gone right for Manchester United, with the team struggling to match the heights of last season. They have neither been lucky on the injury front, with the club suffering frequent injuries to a lot of their key players. In midfield and defence, they have missed several players owing to injuries. While the situation in midfield has gotten better lately, their struggles in defence still continues.

With the club still missing plenty of their centre-backs and left-backs, they have to turn to either academy or play players out of their position. This uncertainty has caused a lot of confusion in the backline with the club suffering a lot in recent games. The only positive has been their FA Cup run. United had famously defeated Liverpool 4-3 in a thriller to reach the semi-final where they will face Coventry City.

Andre Onana on Coventry City

Andre Onana, who has overcome his early season struggles, has now spoken about the importance of the weekend clash against Coventry in the semi-final. “It’s very exciting. But as I’ve always said: playing for this beautiful club, you must win. It’s a semi-final of course; we are going there to win. It’s a very good opponent and this game is going to be tough, but we are Manchester United so we must be there ready for them,” he told the club media.

After coming from Inter Milan, Onana took time some to settle down at the club, as he made some uncharacteristic errors, especially in the Champions League. However, in recent months, he has been excellent for the club. It is something that has not gone unnoticed, with a lot of the supporters expressing their satisfaction with his performances. Speaking about the support of the fans, he said, “It’s always a nice feeling when you know you can count on them, you know?” he started.

The goalkeeper added: “Especially after a tough season, because it’s been a really difficult season. When you have this kind of reward – especially coming from the fans – it’s a nice feeling. It’s a reward for the hard work and a lot of hours behind [the scenes] working with my team-mates, my coaches, and now we have to something to celebrate. It shows how strong we’ve been defending, because alone you can’t achieve these kind of things. But together we are stronger.”

Onana also spoke about the city of Manchester as a whole and how happy he is to be there. “Manchester? It’s a nice city, people are nice here. I feel welcome here; people treat me very good here. Of course, I was in Milan last season and the season before I was in Amsterdam. I had a great time there, and we achieved a lot of big things together, but I’m very happy to be here,” he elaborated.
