The marquee pre-season clash is enough to get both sets of fans excited, however, the Dutchman will know the real challenge at his hand. Even though friendlies are inconsequential in the long run, given that Tuesday will be the first time supporters will see ten Hag manage United, the emphasis will undoubtedly be on him to inspire his team to put on a good show.

The Red Devils had a disappointing season last time around. However, it did not all start badly. The 2021 transfer window could not have been any better, with the club signing three world class players. After spending six years with the Reds during his first stint, Cristiano Ronaldo made a sensational return to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer of 2021. Not to mention that Manchester United had already made two big-name signings earlier in the window – Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

However, the results did not turn out the way it was expected, resulting in former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking. Even interim manager Ralf Rangnick was unable to change the club’s fortunes. Ultimately, United ended another season without a trophy and could only manage a sixth-place finish by getting their lowest-ever points tally in Premier League history with 58 points from 38 games.

On the other hand, Liverpool had an excellent campaign in terms of performance. However, their ending to the campaign was a bit of a letdown too. Following the early promising signs, which saw the club fight for a quadruple, they ended up losing both the big titles – Premier League and Champions League – in the narrowest of margin. Even though they managed a domestic double of winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Liverpool fans had their hearts set on bigger trophies. Hence, Jurgen Klopp’s boys will go at it again trying to win the league title from Manchester City in the upcoming campaign. Hence, they will also be keen to begin the pre-season in the best possible way on Tuesday.

Possible Lineups

It is fair to say that Liverpool had a better transfer window than their rivals till now. The Reds have already signed two promising youngsters –  Fabio Carvalho (Fulham) and Calvin Ramsey (Aberdeen). But, their marquee signing was centre-forward Darwin Nunez, who joined for a massive fee from Portuguese club Benfica. Nunez has made the trip to Thailand, however, it is not clear how many minutes he will play on the pitch. A lot of rotation is expected to happen in each half to give them all a good amount of game time.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are continuing to be linked with several players in the ongoing transfer window but only one – Tyrell Malacia – has joined them so far. The young left-back has made the switch from Dutch club Feyenoord. However, the club is being linked with other players such as Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and the long-running saga of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Besides, the recent reports of their star player Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to leave the club this summer might not have helped Erik ten Hag and company. Either way, Ronaldo has not joined the touring party to Thailand owing to personal matters. Atleast for Tuesday, ten Hag does not have to worry about the Portuguese superstar. With a lot of promising young players in United’s squad, the manager might very well name two different line-ups in each half to get a better understanding of the players at his disposal.

Manchester United possible line-up: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Varane, Malacia, Garner, Fred, Sancho, Fernandes, Rashford, Martial

Liverpool possible line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Jota, Salah, Nunez
