Manchester United are out of Europe after suffering a narrow 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in their final Champions League group stage fixture of the season. United needed to win this match and also required the result in the other group game to go in their favour. However, neither happened after FC Copenhagen defeated Galatasaray 1-0. Hence, Bayern and Copenhagen qualified from Group A, with the German giants topping the table.

For Manchester United, it was a night that kept getting worse. In addition to the previous injury concerns, the Red Devils also saw two of their first-choice defenders – Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw – being taken off due to different injuries. Maguire seemed to have an issue with his groin and Shaw was feeling his hamstring. With Man United set to travel to Liverpool in the Premier League at the weekend, this is the last thing Erik ten Hag would have wanted.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw injury update

After the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, ten Hag was asked to provide an injury update on the English duo. The manager, however, did not reveal much about the same. “I can’t say in this moment. We obviously have to wait 24 hours and then we will have an assessment and diagnosis so we have to wait for it,” ten Hag told TNT Sports.

Ten Hag went on to analyse their group campaign and believed that there were some good performances along the way. “We didn’t lose today in the Champions League, we lost it before. We have to acknowledge that. I think we’ve had some good performances but then also we made mistakes, individual errors from players. In the end, it’s not good enough but I think, today, the performance was very good again and we didn’t deserve to lose,” he also told the official broadcasters.

He added: “The team did very good, we were very good in the defending organisation, we were very good in the pressing. We had many ball regains, especially at the start of the second half. I think the team very good together and there was good spirit. We won a lot of balls but didn’t take benefit from it. Also we played against a strong side – Bayern is a good team and even if they are not in the game, they have individual class to use one moment and unfortunately, it happened.”

We have to accept it: Erik ten Hag

The Manchester United manager wants his squad to accept the reality and use it as a learning curve. He is also keen to get into the Champions League again. “Football is always when you don’t get the points, it’s that you are not qualifying. You have to take that, as a coach and a manager, and you have to look at the performances. We had some good performances in the Champions League, with attacking football, but, at the end of the day, we don’t have the points to qualify. We have to accept it and learn from it,” he explained.

He added: “We’ve played some good football in the Champions League; for example Rasmus Hojlund scored five times and that’s a very good performance, and he has to take that belief into the Premier League. I think that counts for the whole team. We know we want to be more consistent and me as a manager, I have to improve the team, the team’s progress, and I have to guide them, and the players have to take responsibilities, so we have to do that together. We want to be back again in the Champions League.”
