Manchester United supporters will be keen to see their club go on a positive run in the final phase of the 2023-24 campaign. With the last international break of this season done and dusted, domestic action resumes this weekend. The first game on their return is a trip away to Brentford for the Red Devils in the Premier League. It will not be easy to face the Bees on their turf for any side. Add to it, United had plenty of international representations hence it is unclear how fit those players will be for this clash.

Having said that Manchester United can take comfort from the fact that they went into the international break on the back of a morale-boosting 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final. That extra-time win has lifted the mood at Old Trafford and it could act as a launching pad for the club to end the campaign on a high. Besides, they could also have a positive update about an injured star.

Will Lisandro Martinez be fit?

Lisandro Martinez, who has missed a lot of this season due to injuries, has not been in action since the start of February. However, manager Erik ten Hag feels there is a chance for the Argentine World Cup winning defender to be involved in Saturday’s Premier League contest away to Brentford. “Yes there is a chance [he will be in the squad against Brentford],” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, said in his pre-match press conference.

He added: “We have missed him every game because he brings a composure in the team and a calmness in the team and, at the same time, a winning attitude. He can express this very clearly, he can transfer that to the team and that contributes to our levels.” Providing an update on Luke Shaw’s fitness, the manager said, “Yes, I expect him back before the end of the season, that is the plan and he is still on schedule for this. He will return into our team.”

Meanwhile, teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo made his first England appearance during the recently concluded international break. He was praised by many for the composure he showed on the pitch against difficult opponents like Brazil and Belgium despite only being 18 years of age. Adding to the praise, ten Hag said, “I thought it was very good [Mainoo’s performance for England] but we are not surprised.”

He added: “We have seen what he is capable of and that he can very quickly adapt to high levels. It looks very natural and we are very, very happy for him and of course, we are a little bit proud, I will say very proud. It is great for the Academy of Manchester United that they bring up a player and then so young they are going into a national team. That is a big compliment for the whole club and then definitely in the first place for himself, because he did it, but also for all the ones that work with him during his Academy time. It is very good. It is very good news for Manchester United.”
