Manchester United supporters will be eager to see a response from their side following a disappointing weekend result in the Premier League. Despite doing a lot of things right, Man United were unable to find the back of the net away to West Ham United, which proved costly for them in the end. A late rally by West Ham saw them clinch the three points with a 2-0 win. This result has added more pressure on Erik ten Hag’s side who are already going through a bad spell.

Be it with results and injuries, Manchester United have been struggling so far this season. Already out of the Carabao Cup and the Champions League, United’s form has been poor in the Premier League as well. With in-form Aston Villa set to come next in the Premier League, Erik ten Hag gave an update on the squad. “I think hopefully Raphael Varane will return. And for the rest, maybe Amad Diallo, we’ll see how far he is. He has trained now for two weeks. They are probably the ones who can maybe return,” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, said ahead of the game.

Erik ten Hag’s Boxing Day message

Ten Hag was asked to send a message to the supporters ahead of the important Boxing Day clash. “Firstly, I am sure they are very disappointed in us and we have to put things right. We have to do things differently and we really appreciate all the time they’re supporting us, even with the setbacks we have during this season, they’re all the time behind us and we are really appreciative of that. But of course we need any help [we can get]. But first of all, the team and I have to do it,” he explained.

One of the few positives against West Ham was the starting debut made by Willy Kambwala. Asked about him, ten Hag said, “Yeah. So we had five centre-backs who started the season. Today we had three or four who were ill or injured. And then you go and swap positions in the team. But he makes a good impression in training and during games of the Under-21s. So we decided to play him. I think he has shown he has the capabilities. I think his performance was very solid. You can see has a very bright future. Of course he has to work on himself, but you can see his potential and we are very pleased, I think, with his performance.”

Ten Hag then spoke about what his side has to do differently against Villa compared to the defeat against West Ham United. “To start [we have to understand] the meaning of the first goal. When you control the game as we did today, but Villa are different side. They are in very good form and are a very good team. So we have first come to that point, but if you are creating the chances, you have to take them if you want to win the game because otherwise you don’t win games. That’s clear,” he explained.
