Manchester City continued their push for another Premier League title by registering impressive back-to-back wins. After beating Aston Villa 4-1 at home, City overcame Crystal Palace 4-2 away from home. It’s undoubtedly impressive to score four goals each in successive games. The defending champions might not be leading the table at this moment but are not far behind in the title race. They are involved in an intense three-way battle with Liverpool and Arsenal.

There are not many games left to be played this season hence every single point matters from now till the end of the term. Keeping that in mind, Manchester City’s impressive victories over Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in the Premier League would have been a welcome boost for them. In both games, City’s heroes were midfielders. Phil Foden netted a terrific hat-trick against Villa and Kevin De Bruyne followed it up by scoring a brace in the win at Palace.

‘If I don’t perform well then I won’t play’

The two goals helped De Bruyne register his 100th career goal for Man City. He was delighted with the win and credited his top performances to his teammates, saying they keep him on his toes. “It was good. It’s a very untypical season after being out for six months then coming back, sometimes, I feel good and sometimes I need a bit of time for my body,” De Bruyne, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

He added: “I’ve tried to prepare myself as best as possible. It’s something that’s never happened to me before in my life. I just try to do the job as good as possible. Today it went really well. Yeah I do [feel pressure] because these guys keep me on my toes. I don’t expect to just be given my place. Sometimes it’s hard and if I don’t perform well then I won’t play.”

Can Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden play together?

It is interesting to note that Foden started ahead of De Bruyne in the win over Aston Villa. At Palace, it was De Bruyne’s turn to play in place of Foden. However, the Belgian feels they both can play together in the same midfield. “Phil [Foden] has been amazing this season so he deserves it, it keeps me on my toes to give me that little push. It’s possible [to play together in midfield with Foden],” he explained.

De Bruyne used an example of his partnership with former Manchester City midfielder David Silva and said that the same could happen between him and Foden. “When I started with David Silva, nobody thought it would be possible but we managed it in a way. David was the older player and I was younger and the runner, now it’s going to be a bit vice-versa. I don’t see why not. I don’t think we’ve done it that much. If I can do it with Julian [Alvarez], who is more of a striker, then I can also do it with Phil,” he explained.

The Belgian added: “I just try to be more of an example with the way I am on the pitch. I’m not the person who will tell them how to live their life as that is a personal thing. I try to give my best from day one. I’ve been with Phil for about seven years now so I don’t feel he’s a youngster anymore. He’s an established superstar in our team, he’s been here that long. He’s just amazing.”
