Manchester City fans will be delighted to learn that goalkeeper Ederson has signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League club. The Brazilian goalkeeper put pen to paper on a deal which keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2026. Thereby he will be prolonging his commitment to the defending league champions to nine-years from his arrival in June 2017. It is to be noted that Ederson is the fifth senior player to agree new terms in 2021. He has followed in the footsteps of regular first team players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, John Stones and Ruben Dias.

Ederson, whose previous contract was due to expire in the summer of 2025, has quickly become a vital member in Pep Guardiola’s side since joining from Benfica. The Brazilian has kept 94 clean sheets in 195 appearances and has more or less won every domestic honour available, as well as two Premier League Golden Gloves. “This was an easy decision for me,” he told mancity.com. “There is nowhere else I’d want to be.

“To be part of one of the best squads in world football and to compete for trophies year in year out is what every footballer wants, and that is the opportunity you’re given at City. We have an outstanding manager. Working with him has been one of the great experiences of my career and I am a better player for it. We have achieved so much in the last four years, and I am confident we can continue to bring more success to the club in the coming seasons.”

‘Fundamental to our style of play’

Speaking about the contract extension, Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said, “Ederson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He is perfectly suited to our philosophy here at Manchester City and his ability with the ball at his feet makes him fundamental to our style of play.”

“Since we signed him, he has added a new dimension to our game and has revolutionised goalkeeping in the Premier League in the process. His performances over the last four years have been nothing short of exceptional and there is no doubt he will continue to be a key player for us. We are thrilled he has committed his future to the club.”

Ederson on Champions League

Meanwhile, Ederson said winning the Champions League is his top priority with the club. The Brazilian goalkeeper played a vital role in Manchester City’s run to the Champions League final in Porto few months ago. Despite narrowly losing the final 1-0, he believes the team can come back stronger from that setback.

“My main focus is to be able to reach the final of the Champions League again [and] to be champion this time,” he further told the club website. “We had the pleasure of playing a Champions League final for the first time and unfortunately we ended up losing. It was a very hard blow for everyone, but I also think it was a great experience for many players. I think it also served as an experience to become a more mature team.

“We learned more about playing in the Champions League knockout stages. We played very well and in the final we didn’t manage to be so well, but we created some chances and that was a lesson for us because it was a very hard blow. So, I hope to get back to the Champions League final again.”
