Mali began their 2023 AFC qualifiers with a dominant 4-0 win over Congo in a group stage fixture on June 5, before getting the better of South Sudan 3-1, four days later. Against South Sudan, Mohamed Camara, Sekou Koita and Aliou Dieneg netted for Les Aigles to secure all three points. After that, Mali went on to participate in three friendlies in August, two of them were against Mauritius, while one was against Guinea. Zambia, on the other hand, kicked off their AFCON qualifying campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Ivory Coast on June 4 before securing a narrow 2-1 win over Comoros three days later. After that, the Copper Bullets participated in the COSAFA Cup in July, in which they reached the final and lost 1-0 to Namibia.

RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara and Monaco’s Camara are some of the key players in the Mali squad. Tottenham man Yves Bissouma is likely to be deployed behind centre-forward Toure. Olympiacos midfielder Diadie Samassekou could partner Mamadou Fofana in the engine room. As for Zambia, head coach Aljosa Asanovic has named a 23-man squad for the upcoming friendlies. Leicester City’s Patson Daka is likely to spearhead the attack.
