Liverpool will be keen to bounce back from last season’s setback, as they prepare for the new campaign. The Reds were just a shadow of their usual self, as they struggled to maintain any kind of consistency throughout the 2022-23 campaign. They did find the form towards the end of the season but it was too little too late. In the end, Liverpool finished outside the Champions League places and suffered early cup exits.

Going into the new Premier League season, Liverpool supporters will be eager to see their side bounce back from last season’s disappointments. One good thing though Jurgen Klopp has an array of attacking options to choose from. Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are all fighting to be involved in the frontline. Speaking about the forwards in the side, Gakpo told Liverpoolfc.com, “We have a lot of options. We have a lot of games so we can choose which option we need for each game. I think we have great options [and] that is good for the season.”

In their recent pre-season friendly in Singapore, Liverpool suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to German champions Bayern Munich. Gakpo, who scored a good goal in that game, was happy with the challenge they faced. “I think it was a good test. We showed really good moments and lesser-good moments and we can really build on this game. I think it [his goal] was a good start to the game: throw-in on the left-hand side, one-two with Jota, and a good finish I think,” he added.

Virgil van Dijk on Bayern Munich loss

Meanwhile, Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk was happy with certain aspects of the team’s game during the defeat to Liverpool but felt there was room for improvement. “So many good things, so many things that we have to improve. But yeah, obviously a good opponent, a very good opponent, and they punish you if you’re not on it for a split-second and that’s what happened today. But overall there were so many good moments, especially with the ball I think we showed a lot of improvement, but there is still work to do and that’s what we are going to do,” he told the club’s website.

The Dutch defender was then asked how much it would have helped playing a side of Bayern Munich’s stature in the pre-season. “Yeah, 100 per cent. Obviously we want to play on the highest level, we want to compete with the highest level players and teams and you have to be on it every second of the game. Unfortunately in a couple of moments in the game we weren’t and they punish you, that’s how it is – we can do that as well to the other team. We have to find a way to stay more than focused for 95 minutes and obviously don’t concede but like I said, we are still in pre-season, we made changes, the intensity is up so we have to keep going,” he added.
