Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick inside the opening 23 minutes in his side’s 7-1 win over RB Salzburg at Allianz arena on Tuesday. The German giants thrashed Salzburg 8-2 on aggregate to go through to the quarter-finals of Champions League. The Polish star opened the scoring courtesy of two identical penalties on 12th and 21st minute before completing his hat-trick two minutes later with an open-play goal.

Lewandowski put the hosts ahead after being brought down inside the box by Maximilian Wober and the referee awarded a penalty. The 33-year-old stepped up, sent the keeper the wrong way and deposited the ball into the bottom corner.

Nine minutes later, Lewandowski was once again fouled just inside the box by Wober and the referee awarded Bayern’s second penalty of the night after a VAR intervention. Lewandowski once again converted the spot-kick same way as the first one.

Two minutes later, The Poland international ran onto Muller’s pass and then knocked a shot past the advancing goalkeeper Philipp Kohn from the edge of the box, although initially the ball hit the post the striker tucked in the rebound.

The previous quickest hat-trick from the start of a Champions League match came in 24 minutes from Marco Simone for AC Milan against Rosenberg in 1996. Lewandowski now has 12 goals in this year’s competition, one ahead of Ajax’s Sebastian Haller. Meanwhile it is the striker’s 42nd goal in 35 appearances in all competitions for Bayern.

Other than Lewandowski, Thomas Muller netted a brace, and Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane also got on the score-sheet to complete the drubbing. Gnabry brilled home from Kingsley Coman’s assist before Muller netted a second half double.

Muller’s first goal came from a perfect low shot from the edge of the box while the second was a well-worked goal involving Lewandowski and Sane. Sane put the icing on the cake when he smashed home past Kohn at the near post after being released on goal by Lewandowski’s nice little back-heel pass.

The Bavarians will next play Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga fixture on Saturday and will be aiming to extend their lead at the summit of the standings. Julian Nagelsmann’s side are on 59 points from 25 games, nine points ahead of second placed Borussia Dortmund, who have a game in hand.
