Spanish forward Rodrigo who represents Leeds United in the Premier League believes that his team will face a tougher challenge this season. Rodrigo is expecting a tough summer as he prepares himself along with the rest of the players for an intense campaign in the English league. The forward initially joined up with the Spanish national team before the recently concluded Euro 2020, before going on to head back home.

“We have a good amount of time to prepare ourselves for the next season. Everyone knows that it will be harder than the last one. The opponents know us better, so it will be really tough. Last season maybe the expectation of us was less. I think this year we show we have the level to be between the best so the expectation will be higher, that is natural,” said Rodrigo in an interaction with Leeds United’s official website.

The veteran expressed his excitement having returned to pre-season, following the conclusion of a campaign that saw restricted game-time.

“It’s like the first day back in school”

“It’s like the first day back in school. Everyone is happy and excited, they want to start training as soon as possible. It’s good to see everyone back again. For me it is a pleasure to train with the guys. I think we have an amazing atmosphere in the dressing room. We have a very competitive team but also very respectful between each other. So, I am very happy and excited to be here again with the guys. I think everyone is looking forward to next season and is very excited to continue showing our level in the Premier League.”

“Last season I had a lot of small breaks during the whole season, with Covid and different small injuries. This is not good for any player so that is it, I am preparing myself in the best way to do my best during the season. Everyone knows pre-season is hard, we train a lot, a lot of tests and everything but it’s an important part of the year. We prepare the body again for a very hard and long season, it’s true it is hard but it is necessary and important!”

“I want to play as many games as I can”

Another player who is eager to put his best foot forward is Tottenham Hotspur’s, Matt Doherty.

“Look, I want to play as many games as I can, and I want to contribute in a positive way as much as I can. Obviously, I didn’t feel like I gave my best foot forward last season for different reasons, but I feel positive I can get a full pre-season under my belt and see what I can do and where we can take this season.”

Doherty was hit hard after testing positive for COVID-19 last season.

“I was in the team and then I had COVID and came out, and struggled to get back in. I had a little loss of form at times and struggled to regain that as well, just little things weren’t going my way. But look, I maintained my work ethic, I probably worked harder last year than I may ever have done before, I just wasn’t able to emulate that work on the pitch when I did get the opportunity. I under-performed, I realise that. But look, I’m trying to get back into pre-season, get my form, my fitness and confidence going, and be ready for the first game of the season.”
