Kai Havertz felt Chelsea created plenty of good chances against Burnley, but rued the missed opportunities in the 1-1 draw on Saturday. It was Havertz, who opened the scoring for the Blues in the first half, but a late Matej Vydra goal meant the points were shared at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are still at the top of the Premier League table, garnering 26 points from 11 games till now. “What was missing was some goals,” stated Havertz, who had given Chelsea the lead with a downward header from an inch-perfect Reece James cross.

“Burnley had one chance, they scored one goal and sometimes that is football, but we could have improved our finishing skills in the game. We had a lot of good chances but we also scored just one goal so we lose two big points for us so of course it is frustrating. We did a very good game but as I said, sometimes that is football and you have to accept it,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

Havertz: I had a lot of pain

Havertz suffered a leg injury after he fell over the LED board at the Matthew Harding End of the pitch. However, the German international was able to continue with the match and completed the 90 minutes. “I had a lot of pain so I just thought I have to try to run again and sometimes in a game the pain goes away, but it was okay for me. I scored the goal so then you have good feelings and it is okay,” he said.

Chelsea have dropped points in the Premier League for the first time since September. Nonetheless, the Blues will go into the final international break of 2021 at the top of the table. “Of course it is not the best day when you draw at home with Burnley but all in all we can be very satisfied with the last few matches,” summed up Havertz.

“We played good football. We put a lot of effort into the games and we have to keep the momentum after the international break, come back here as strong as before and I am very positive that we will continue this way.”

Tuchel: Burnley were very lucky to draw

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has praised the team’s “fantastic effort” despite drawing 1-1 with Burnley. “Burnley were very lucky to draw but that’s football,” said Tuchel after the match. “We were very lucky to escape with a clean sheet at Brentford. That’s why everybody loves the game. I stick with my feeling from the sideline and I have proof from all data that we did a fantastic match. I liked the attitude. I liked the intensity. I liked the concentration level. These are what you need after seven wins in a row.

“We came from an away game in the Champions League and we played a team like Burnley who always puts long balls into your box and you must keep them out of your box, and on that level we collected the first and second balls. You need to do so much invisible work as a team on such a high level to control a match like this, to create so many chances.

“So it was a fantastic effort and fantastic performance. I’m super happy. It can happen in football that sometimes, unfortunately like today, somebody else steals some points. Like I said, we have been lucky in Brentford to walk away with a clean sheet. Burnley are lucky today to get the result but it happens sometimes.”
