Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has provided updates on the fitness situation of six players ahead of their Premier League clash with Brentford on Saturday. Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is available again having missed last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace due to illness, while Roberto Firmino is “in contention” following a hamstring injury. Besides, James Milner and Neco Williams are also back in training as the Reds prepare for the trip to Brentford Community Stadium. Naby Keita is unlikely to feature against the Bees and Thiago Alcantara is sidelined. The Reds have started the new Premier League season on a positive note, winning four of the five matches in the league.

“Trent was not injured, Trent was a little bit ill. He’s back in training, trained yesterday and will be fine,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com at the AXA Training Centre on Thursday. “Neco made [his] first steps the day before yesterday; yesterday a [recovery] day; will be in training today, if it’s 100 per cent, we will see how he can cope with it. James was a similar thing to Trent, so he should be recovered. I saw him running around here, nobody told me differently – I assume he will be in training today.

“Naby probably not. It’s not a serious thing but we have to wait until the pain settles, pretty much. We will see about that. Thiago, no chance. Bobby trained already for two or three days, so he is back in contention, let me say it like this. We used him a little bit as a ‘joker’ [in training]. But he will be in the normal training and then we have to make a decision if we take him with us or not. Porto, 100 per cent. Brentford, we have to see.”

Jurgen Klopp hails Anfield Road Stand expansion

Jurgen Klopp has welcomed this week’s confirmation that the expansion of the Anfield Road Stand will move forward. He labelled it “very exciting”. On Wednesday, Liverpool FC announced that plans to expand the stadium’s capacity by 7,000 seats will move forward, with work expected to be completed in time for the 2023-24 season.

Klopp is excited by the prospect of having more supporters inside Anfield. “I am [really excited] and I really hope they will finish it in time. What did they say? 2023-24? I really will kick their butts that they will be ready for that moment,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. “Next we have a nice event – the ground breaking. I will be there, that’s a nice moment but a much nicer moment is when it’s then finished. There’s some work to do in between but what I really like about the club is that we really work on the future, these kind of things.

“From time to time our owners get some criticism for this or that, but we should really not forget that they gave us more space already and now another 7,000. That is great news for the club for the future. Giving 7,000 more people the opportunity to watch this wonderful team playing football is great. And it will look good as well, how we saw with the last stand we built. It’s good, it’s really good, very exciting. Have to wait for it – difficult – but now I know it will happen so I want to have it tomorrow actually.”
