After sneaking through to the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group stage, Jordan secured a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Iraq in their first knockout round tie through injury-time efforts from Yazan Al-Arab and Nizar Al-Rashdan. The Chivalrous then secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup first time ever courtesy of edging past Tajikistan on Friday thanks to Vakhdat Khanonov’s 66th-minute own goal. The Jordanians have never defeated South Korea before but were minutes away from doing so in the group stage, but an own goal by Yazan Al-Arab in stoppage time cost Hussein Ammouta’s men two points.
South Korea, on the other hand, had to dig deep to get the better of Australia in the quarter-final stage. The Socceroos took the lead through Criag Godwin’s opener three minutes before the break, and just when it looked like the Taegeuk Warriors were going to pack their bags, Son Heung-min was brought down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Hwang Hee Chan stepped up and smashed the ball into the top left corner, and forced the match into extra-time. Jurgen Klinsmann’s side looked the better side in the extra time and deservedly netted the winner through Son’s stunning free-kick in the 104th-minute. Though Klinsmann’s men have scored 12 goals from their last five games in the tournament, they have also conceded eight times.
