On Tuesday evening, Japan will face Turkey in an international friendly at Genk’s Cegeka Arena. This encounter marks only the second meeting between the two nations, with their previous clash occurring in the 2002 World Cup’s round of 16, where Turkey secured a 1-0 victory.

Japan enters Tuesday’s game in exceptional form, boasting a three-game winning streak, with their most recent victory being a remarkable 4-1 triumph over Germany. The Samurai Blue took an early lead at Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena, with Junya Ito finding the net just 11 minutes into the match. Later in the game, Ayase Ueda, Takuma Asano, and Ao Tanaka also contributed to the scoring. Notably, Japan had previously defeated Germany at the 2022 World Cup with a 2-1 victory, subsequently topping a competitive Group E featuring Spain and Costa Rica. While their World Cup journey ended in the round of 16 against Croatia via penalties, Japan has continued to build on their positive momentum in recent friendly matches.

Turkey has also been enjoying a strong run lately, with five wins, one draw, and one loss in their last seven games. This puts them in a favorable position to qualify for Euro 2024. The Crescent-Stars currently lead Group D, holding a three-point advantage over Croatia and Armenia, although they have played more matches than other teams in the group. In their recent match against Armenia, despite not delivering their best performance, Bertug Yildirim’s 88th-minute equalizer secured them a point. Following their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, Turkey aims to build momentum for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers in October, including a challenging away match against Croatia. With little at stake this Tuesday, coach Stefan Kuntz might use the game to experiment with tactics and the starting lineup, especially given their less-than-ideal showing against Armenia.
