Arsenal surprised many people with the level at which they played in the 2022-23 Premier League season. The Gunners not only played good football but were also able to consistently get the right results. This meant Mikel Arteta’s side were leading the table for most parts of the season. Just when it seemed like Arsenal might do the impossible, they endured a bad run of form in the league.

Sadly for them, that unfortunate run of results came in the business end of the season. It was at that exact moment when Manchester City found their feet and were nearly unstoppable on the pitch. As Arsenal slipped down, City leapfrogged them to take the top spot, which they held on till the final matchday to get their hands on another Premier League trophy.

It’s the best league in the world: Mikel Arteta

It must have been difficult for Arsenal fans to digest. After leading the league table for so long and yet coming away without winning the title would have hurt them. Arteta is aiming to go one better in the coming season. “That is our ambition. We know the difficulty: it’s the best league in the world and next season is going to be the toughest in Premier League history. Why? It already was last year,” Arteta told Spanish newspaper Marca.

“I’ve been here for 22 years and I’ve never seen a competitive level like that. So much quality, so much organisation, so many resources, so many good coaches… and now [Mauricio] Pochettino and [Andoni] Iraola are coming. That’s the level and to win the Premiership you have to be the best. That’s why you have to strengthen.”

Arsenal also suffered some key injuries during the title run-in. The most notable absentee was in-form defender William Saliba. “When we started to get injuries, I felt it was going to cost us. The level of demand could not be maintained. If you want to win the Premiership against City, you have to get to April-May with all players available and at their best. And we, because of injuries, didn’t get there,” he elaborated.
