Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was understandably “disappointed” after suffering a stunning 0-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. A late goal from Kortney Hause secured the visitors all three points at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season. There was, however, nothing De Gea could do about the well-timed headed goal from the corner. In the action-packed game, Manchester United not only conceded a late goal, but also there was time for Bruno Fernandes to miss a last-gasp penalty in front of a shell-shocked Stretford End. After the game, the 30-year-old Spaniard did not mince his words when speaking to MUTV.

“It’s a very disappointing day for us,” David De Gea told club media. “I think there’s no excuses today. We play at home, with confidence. If we want to win big trophies like the Premier League, [we need to win] these types of games.” De Gea pulled off few stunning saves to deny Villa on the night, especially from a Watkins strike on 69 minutes. However, he was not able to do much with the headed goal. Despite the poor result, the Spain international – on a personal level – continued to show his best form.

‘I saw the replay again and probably it’s offside’

“Yeah, I tried to make saves, always help the team,” he said. “Big saves but at the end we concede from a set-piece and I saw the replay again and probably it’s offside. He was very close to me. Again, that happens. I don’t know, it’s a disappointing result and a hard one to take. Now we have to be ready for the next one.”

The shot-stopper did not want to put any blame on Bruno Fernandes despite the penalty miss in injury time. “He’s very confident, he took the ball, so we believe a lot in him,” De Gea said about his Portuguese teammate. “It’s just a penalty. It’s a bad kick and that happens. It’s a normal thing, this is football. He’s going to be the same, a top player, so it’s totally fine.”

David De Gea on Champions League

Now attention turns to the UEFA Champions League clash against Villarreal at Old Trafford. With European nights under the floodlights returning to M16, United will be determined to bounce back from this defeat and also the opening group match loss to Young Boys.

“Of course. Now it’s time to recover, look at what we can improve, so yeah, another massive game on Wednesday,” David De Gea emphasised. “We play at home with the fans, so it’s going to be a good one. Let’s be ready.”

De Gea expressed his excitement for fans to return in full strength for a European night once again. “The atmosphere in the last few games have been amazing, absolutely top from the fans,” the goalkeeper said.

“We’ve missed them a lot, to be honest, so hopefully we can win more games at home to make them enjoy it when they come here. Like I said, let’s be ready for the game on Wednesday.”
